Aloha Pūʻōhala ʻOhana,
We hope all our keiki and ʻohana are safe and healthy at this time. As you already may be aware, the Hawai’i Department of Education has closed all public schools through April 30, 2020. Enrichment activities are being developed through the HIDOE as well as with our own Pūʻōhala staff to provide all students with continued academic support. Our staff has been working eagerly to give our students innovative learning opportunities that we hope excite them as much as it has excited us to create! Our school website will have an ‘Ohana Enrichment Corner beginning March 30. This will be for all our students and families to access. The plan going forward is for distribution of report cards, hard copy learning packets, and some technology hardware, during a drive-up service on April 6, 2020. Each teacher has been creating google classrooms for their students so it will be helpful for students to have computer access. The survey sent out last week helps us to support you with technology. More information coming to you later this week. On our school website is a "Library" section! Find our link at the Pūʻōhala School main website, or go to https://puohalalibrary.weebly.com/ to find the library directly. This "virtual library" provides helpful links, updates, and enrichment activities that all of our families can use right now! See our Quick Links, Storytime Any Time, and For Families tabs to get started with learning-at-home... Be sure to check back often, as site features are being updated every day! Fill out an "Ask the Librarian" form if you need more help with finding resources or simply answering random questions - think of it like your personal Google Assistant! Other resources are available through the HIDOE website for all families and students for the school closure period of March 30, 20202 to April 30, 2020. They will be placed on the main HIDOE website, then click on the COVID-19 tab. Resources will be added as the month progresses. https://wwwhawaiipublicschools.org. https://sites.google.com/k12.hi.us/resources-student-parent/home Lastly, this is the letter from our Complex-Area Superintendent Matt Ho. Please watch this Talk Story with Dr. K - Welcome back video from the Hawaiʻi Department of Education.
"March 24, 2020. Welcome back to our 13,000 teachers who teleworked yesterday. In light of the recent county and state decisions for a stay-at-home order until April 30, the Department will be adjusting our plans to continue to align with these important parameters for health and safety. By the end of the week, we will be sharing the planning work accomplished by you, our teachers and principals, that will guide us through the end of the year. I want to thank each and every one of the Department’s 44,000 employees for working in new ways during these unusual times. Mahalo for your patience and aloha as we harness our resilience to get through this health crisis together." Aloha Pūʻōhala Ohana,
We hope you are all keeping healthy and practicing social distancing. As we enter into our week of extended Spring Break, rest assured we are preparing to move forward with some type of distance learning program for your keiki. We will share more details with you later this week. This is new territory for many of us. Please be patient with us as we learn together to reach out to our students via the web and special apps. For now, we need all our families to take a survey about your home’s technology capabilities and needs. Please complete the attached survey and submit as soon as possible. https://bit.ly/3abkbEa MEALS FOR CHILDREN Beginning tomorrow, Monday, March 23, the Windward schools listed below will be providing breakfast and lunch to-go for anyone under the age of 18. They will only have 50 bags prepared for Monday, but based on the need from Monday, they will increase it day by day. This is their effort meant to fill in the gaps, especially for the keiki in our neighborhood that may not have the means to travel to King intermediate school for the DOE feeding. This is NOT a DOE sponsored event. King Intermediate and Kahalu’u Elementary are the only two current schools providing breakfast AND lunch in the Kāne’ohe area. I hope this message finds you all in good health! Our staff is also trying to stay healthy. We realize this is still the first week of spring break, but for some reason with this health threat, it feels like it's already been a long time! It appears we will have a couple of additional weeks added on that our students will be away from school. Here are a few updates: 1) Please tune in to the HIDOE press conference scheduled today, Thursday, March 19th at 3:00 p.m. This will be public school-specific information. It will be streamed on our HIDOE Facebook page as well as through news outlets: https://www.facebook.com/HIDOE808 2) SCHOOL IS CLOSED: The campus is closed to any visitors. If you need assistance, please call our office and leave a message (808) 305-5900. We will be checking messages regularly. At this time, students are scheduled to return to school on or around April 7th. As you know, this could change as health concerns arise. 3) Education of students: Please know that we are being innovative in our planning should we need to provide more distance learning (i.e. computer access to teacher and assignments from home) to our students. We will be sending out a computer/internet survey either today or tomorrow. Please fill that out and submit so we are more prepared to assist you in your homes! 4) ANY QUESTIONS: please head to our Pūʻōhala website https://puohala.weebly.com/calendar.html or the HIDOE website http://www.hawaiipublicschools.org/Pages/Home.aspx for accurate and the most up-to-date information. MAHALO FOR YOUR PATIENCE IN THIS TIME OF UNCERTAINTY!!! Pūʻōhala Administration |
