ALOHA PU'OHALA OHANA!!!!
We have come to the end of the 2019 - 2020! Wow, what a whirlwind the end of the year has been. We are so proud of our haumana and their perseverance in their academics this last quarter. The teachers and staff have been busy closing up the school year by preparing grades and packing up their classrooms as well as preparing report cards and student supplies for pick up. So, please come to the school: FRIDAY, MAY 29 AND MONDAY, JUNE 1 9AM - 2PM FRONTING CAFETERIA Staff will wait along the cafeteria walkway. You will drive up and state your keiki's name and kumu name. At this time please return library books, classroom text books and computer technology borrowed - don't forget the cord! Everyone should return their technology devices during this time. A note from our English branch 4th & 5th grade support team: Due to the recent COVID19 developments, the 4th and 5th graders Kaua'i field trip had to be canceled, but… silver linings were found. All students were able to attend (even their ʻohana) the virtual Grove Farm Kaua’i Field Trip- at no cost, with no permission slips, and concerns about separating from their keiki were gone! We wanted to honor the students' hard work in preparing for this trip and provide them with something versus nothing. So, in lieu of an off-island trip to Kauai, the Pūʻōhala fourth and fifth graders participated in a live virtual field trip to sites on Grove Farm Kaua’i. As a culminating activity to the sustainable food, water, and energy lessons they learned in class, the students partnered with subject matter experts and the Grove Farm team to provide the students with an experience in real-time as if they were there. Although separated by distance, the students felt a connection to the Grove Farm team and subject matter experts' as their passion, commitment to the island, and genuine aloha had no boundaries. I'm attaching the kids google slides of thanks. Copy and paste into your address bar to view. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1onRS_9k8cl0wMhrhW_6X8QwE5HU-E2orPJUD3yNZvmI/edit?ts=5ed03f7d#slide=id.g85b2fab134_0_50 SEE YOU TOMORROW, FRIDAY, MAY 29 9AM - 2PM for pick up of report cards and supplies. Don't forget technology and library books! Mahalo, Pu'ohala Administration and Staff Mental, Social & Emotional Wellness Spirit Week and Teacher Appreciation Week! Mei 4 -8, 20205/1/2020
Aloha mai kākou,
We have a very exciting week ahead! For spirit week, we will be focusing on our social and emotional well being. Please take some time to take care of your mental, social & emotional wellness while also recognizing others such as your family members, first responders, and essential workers, with positive thoughts or actions. This theme also just so happens to pair perfectly with our second theme of the week - Teacher Appreciation Week! We will like to recognize and show appreciation to all of our kumu and teachers who have worked so diligently throughout the year and even more during the distance learning! We will be honoring our wonderful kumu and teachers this week by showing them our appreciation for them.
Aloha Pūʻōhala ʻOhana,
As we head into the last month of school, we hope you have been able to fall into a routine with our distance learning program. Please remember that we have other resources on our website that lead to google classrooms for physical education, counseling and AIMS lessons as well as the Library. Your student will need to join the class if they haven't done so yet. Utilize these sites when your child is taking a break from the academic focus of their teacher/kumu. If the kids are getting restless or bored, get them on one of Mr. Michael's PE activities. Give them a challenge to do one of the activities a day. Also, if you find your child is having a hard time coping with not being around friends, have them go to the Counselor's corner and work on an activity or AIMS lesson. Please reach out to your kumu if you have any questions or concerns. We want to remind all families of our reading resource time with Ms. Chris Au. We went on a short hiatus for our newsletter, but we are back with another issue highlighting the wonderful things our Pūʻōhala ʻOhana is doing during the distance learning experience.
Please visit our school Social Workerʻs new website which is linked to our distance learning resource page as well. Pūʻōhala Schoolʻs Social Worker Website. Here is a message from our school Social Worker, Mrs. Chanelle Omo:
My name is Chanelle Omo (a.k.a. "Mrs. Omo") & I am your School Social Worker. During the "normal" school year I am available to: 1.) meet one-on-one with individual students to work on any issues they may be having (i.e., peer relationships & behavior problems) 2.) facilitate small groups to address common student needs (such as grief, social skills, divorce, and girls groups), and 3.) address attendance concerns using a multi-tier approach. During this unprecedented time, my goals are 1.) to maintain existing counseling relationships with students via Tele-Health 2.) to maintain support and consultation to School Teams 3.) to connect as many families & students to the resources that they need (including housing, healthcare, financial assistance, food distribution, and more) , as well as 4.) equip parents with tips, tools, and encouragement as we do the 'most important job in the world' through this COVID-19 Pandemic. I am here to bridge school, home, and community to help our students be as successful as possible. If you are a HIDOE Windward District staff or parent, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] . Aloha Pūʻōhala ʻOhana,

We hope you have been able to help your child navigate the Google Classroom the teachers have prepared. If you have any problems, please reach out to your teacher first. They are ready and willing to help you as much as they can. If they are not able to provide a solution that works, your teacher will reach out to the technology specialist and/or Admin. Our expectation is for all students to be engaged in the work provided by their teachers for continued student learning and growth, leading to preparedness going into the following school year. Please continue to work within your google classrooms. Some classes have some hardcopy items to work on. These will be provided at a pickup TOMORROW, APRIL 14TH 9AM - 11AM for the below-listed classes only: PICK UP HARD COPY PACKETS: COME ONLY IF YOUR CHILD IS IN ONE OF THESE CLASSES or if you've made arrangements through your teacher for technology pickup. Kindergarten - Ms. Caira Papa Malaa’o - Kumu Aokea Papa ‘Ekahi - Kumu Kamalei Papa ‘Eha - Kumu Malia We will be located fronting the cafeteria. **** A word from our Librarian: Hello from your librarian! When the school campus is open on Tuesday, April 14th for packet pickups, we ask that you also use this time to drop off any library books your student might still have with them. We will have a book drop bin ready at the pickup line. If your student is still reading their books, please be welcomed to keep them for now. To be clear, no late fees will be applied regardless of when the books are returned. However, just note that this may be our last opportunity to return them this school year and the sooner we can quarantine the books, the safer we will be in sanitizing them for next year. Of course, we understand that families have a lot on their plate already, so donʻt stress about the books! We ask that you help us mālama our library collection in whichever way works best for your family - if that means bringing books back, great! If it means keeping (and reading!) them a bit longer, that is awesome too! If you have any questions about books, just ask your Kumu and they will point you in the right direction. Happy reading! YMCA offers child care to those essential workers who need assistance. Please go to their website. There is financial assistance available. Attached is the flyer. Windward Y Essential Workers Child Care Program Flyer.pdf You can email directly to [email protected] or call Essential Child Care at 492-6781 They continue to provide lunch outside the campus gates beginning at 11:30.
